I love Japanese whisky, but it’s a challenging relationship. Years ago, supplies of my favorites started drying up and prices went nuts. Today, many “Japanese whiskies” on retail shelves weren’t even made in Japan. It’s a struggle to know what’s authentic and what isn’t. And this is the primary reason I created the Whisky Map of Japan.
All 44 current authentic distilleries are represented--no importers or bottlers of fake whisky. A couple of these are iconic distilleries that closed. And several more are brand new.
